Going back and watching the Ken Burns documentary on baseball, you will discover so much about the sport that has long been forgotten. Many say that the time of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig was the greatest time in baseball history, however, many feel that it’s impossible to say that considering sadly, segregation was still a part of the game.

Many feel that if this was not the case, it would have been the greatest era of baseball of all time without a doubt. Unfortunately, Fans would never get to see the likes of Satchel Page pitch against Joe DiMaggio. But they did get to see ballplayers travel around the country in All-Star teams that just would not fly today. One of those teams was Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

The teams were a combination of the Bustin’ Babes and the Larrupin’ Lous and they would go on to make a stop in Battle Creek in 1928 when they played at Kellogg Park against a local All-Star team, as one local resident remembers :
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig barnstormed through Battle Creek in 1928, each collecting a hit at Kellogg Park in a contest against All-Stars from Kellogg's and Postum. During the game, Ruth cracked his bat and later gave it to a local boy, Harry Schill of 34 Vale Street. “That’s the bat I knocked those three homers with in St. Louis," Ruth said while reluctantly handing over the bat.
The truth is the two Hall of Famer didn’t exactly destroy the Battle Creek team, as the All-Star team from the babe and Lou only defeated the team three to one. Both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig got a hit and the latter was even one of the runs scored.
It was the Pitcher and right Fielder Bysco who may have been the best player all day having seven assists in the game. Regardless it was a special time in baseball when you could see matchups like that. It’s pretty sweet these two heavy hitters came through Southwest Michigan.
