It's October which means fall is here and the Halloween spirit is ramping up which also means people are beginning to decorate their homes to match the season. There are pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, blow up figures, spider webs, and more draping porches, yards, and roofs. The orange, brown, purple, and black colorways have been vibrant across Halloween and fall decorations for years.

October has become a month that everyone has circled on their calendar for one reason or another. One of the most commonly known awareness months is October for its acknowledgement as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the color pink is used to show that support. This isn't the only movement that is recognized during the month of October which leads us to the purple lights.

October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month as this continues to be a growing issue in not just Michigan or the United States but the entire world. The purple porch lights are used to show support for those who have been victims of domestic violence. People will shine the purple light to show support while some victims will use it as a sign of solidarity. The motto "Shine a light and save a life" follows the movement as well.

As this continues to be an issue, the state of Michigan is doing everything it can to help those who may find themselves in a domestic violence situation. Visiting www.mcadsv.org and clicking "locate help near you" will help find the nearest resources to be of aid. There's also the national domestic violence hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233.)
