Michigan High School Sports Celebrates 100 Years
High school sports are some of the most enjoyable times of our lives regardless of how you are involved. When you think about it, players will recall those memories for years to come with their friends and teammates, coaches get to make an impact on their player's lives, and parents and other family members get to support. There are jobs that are created around high school sports and don't forget all the fun and memories for the students who are in the student section.
Everyone loves high school sports for the fact that the only thing that matters is the children enjoying themselves, becoming better people, and striving to win while understanding it's not the only thing that matters. Michigan is one of the states that does high school sports the right way and that shows by their long-standing history.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has been in service since the 1924-1925 school year, which means this year, the 2024-2025 school year marks the 100th year of official high school sports in Michigan. This makes the MHSAA one of the oldest high school sports associations in the country.
For the last 100 years, hundreds of thousands, if not over a million athletes have participated in over 27 varsity sports across the state of Michigan. There are stories of hall of fame, Olympic, and other successful world athletes getting their start at a high school here in Michigan.
Right now, and through the rest of the 2024-25 school year, the MHSAA website has stories unfolding some of the best memories, storylines, comebacks, and other relevant sports history from Michigan High School Sports over the last 100 years. As a coach within the MHSAA system, I would love to see this association reach another hundred years as students continue to excel both on and off the courts, fields, pools, and other playing surfaces.
What are your favorite high school sports memories from your playing days? What about the ones you spent in the stands cheering from the student section? What are your favorite memories of your children playing high school sports here in Michigan?
