Going to and finishing college is one of the biggest decisions and most important accomplishments that someone will encounter in their life. While you want to make sure that you are going to attend an institution that will keep you safe and is most likely not too far away from home, there are so many other factors that come into play as well. For example, the campus lifestyle, the city around it, the quality of the education for your major, and the sports are just a few things that every student has in mind.

For those of us here in Michigan, we are quite lucky to have a handful of great institutions to select from when deciding where to further our academic careers. Of course, there are some obvious answers that fly to the top of this list like the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, but they aren't the only colleges to be privy of in the Mitten state.

In fact, there are 4 other colleges that are ranked inside of the top 300 in the country and 44 total Michigan institutions ranked inside of the top 1,600 colleges or universities in the United States. Below are the top 5 Michigan colleges and where they ranked on the list in comparison to other colleges in America:

  • The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor topped the list for state institutions, ranking No. 48 overall. Metrics included a 93% graduation rate, 18% acceptance rate, the $32,284 total cost of studying a year and the expected median alumni salary of $64,597.
  • Private liberal arts college Hillsdale College ranked one slot below the Ann Arbor university at No. 49 overall with its 87% graduation rate, 21% acceptance rate and $46,472 annual total cost of studying.
  • Wayne State University in Detroit ranked No. 110 overall, boasting its 60% graduation rate and median alumni salary of $50,183.
  • Kettering University, the Flint engineering and technology university, ranked No. 206 overall. Its graduates enjoy a median alumni salary of $80,708.
  • Andrews University in Berrien Springs ranked No. 291. Its 232-member student body can expect a median alumni salary of $47,414.
