The Western Michigan Univ. Board of Trustees voted to raise the cost of room and board 3% for the coming 2017-18 school year.

The new rates add up to an increase of $280 for the 15 meal plan, for students living on campus. The total cost for room and board will be $9,606.

WMU says it operates 22 dorms, five dining facilities, along with seven cafés, and five apartment complexes. In the fall 2016 semester, the school says 5,129 residents lived on-campus, and 90 percent of freshmen chose to live in the residence halls.
