It's not a surprise that craft beers from West Michigan did well at the Great American Beer Festival this weekend, but it wasn't the usual suspects you would expect to be honored.West Michigan-made craft beers walked away with two Gold Medals, and Rockford Brewing was named Small Brewpup of the Year (along with a Silver and Bronze medal for two of its beers).

St. Joe's Silver Harbor Brewing's aptly named Shipfaced (it's 12.6%) and Odd Side Ales in Grand Haven's Barrel Aged Sweet Potato Soufflé Rye (10% ABV) won Gold Medals in their respective categories.

Aphrodisiac Chocolate Pomegranate Imperial Stout from Cranker's Brewery in Big Rapds won a Silver medal, and did Rockford's Sheehan's Stout and Odd Sides' Rye Hipster Brunch Stout.

Bronze medals were picked up by Rockford's Rogue River Brown, and two of the biggies around here, Perrin's Passionfruit Gose, and New Holland's Pilgrim's Dole.

Cranker's and New Holland are just two of the breweries that will be at the Kalamazoo Craft Beer Festival on November 4th at Wings Events Center.
