The Tigers issued a statement from team owner Mike Illitch, who said he was releasing Dombrowski from his contract to allow him to pursue other opportunities, but ESPN is using the word "fired" on their crawl.

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark tweeted afterward: "Dave Dombrowski's teams just finished 1st in 4 straight seasons. Before that the #Tigers had finished 1st 4 times in previous 65 seasons"

Here is the Tigers Press release:

"The Detroit Tigers today announced that Assistant General Manager Al Avila has been promoted to the role of executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager. Avila will assume all responsibilities related to baseball operations of the club and he will report directly to Tigers Owner Mike Ilitch.
