Spencer Powell is a 16 year old who was born with Congenital Heart Disease, and the doctors thought he wouldn’t make it one week after he was born. After multiple open heart surgeries throughout his life, he finally received a new heart.

A friend who is close to his family has been texting me updates on his progress and this morning, I received these texts:

5:58 a.m. "Spence has taken on a fever, and his lungs have accumulated some fluids.  He's struggling a bit.  They started him on a CPAP, they have sedated him and are draining off the fluids with a needle, they feel strongly that the fluids are making it hard to breathe.  If this doesn't work they will have to intebate him."

CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, is a treatment that uses mild air pressure to keep the airways open.

7:08 a.m. "They drained 70cc of fluids and then left him on CPAP until about an hour ago.  Things have become stable and decent.  The CPAP is off and he's on high flow oxygen and is tolerating.  He's slowly becoming a little more aware and talking a little.  Baby Steps.
