Back in 2006 I went back to College and got my degree in American Sign Language, one of the best decisions of my life.

I met the most amazing people, hearing and Deaf over the years. I can honestly say that the Deaf community in Michigan is proud, strong and kind. I was thrilled to read the article on WWMT.com that talked about the measures State Police are taking to insure the safety of Deaf people.

"They're giving out special visor cards for patrol cars--something deaf people carry as well.

The cards can help officers communicate with people who have speech or hearing issues."

This all comes in the wake of a Deaf North Carolina man who was fatally shot during a traffic stop. Daniel Harris was not armed, and killed not far from his home. It was tragedy, that could have been avoided, and never should of happened.

According to WWMT.com...

"Thursday afternoon, Michigan State Police and other departments will gather with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, in Lansing, to talk about the issues the deaf community faces, and how to handle those situations."

I am thrilled that the State of Michigan is taking steps to keep all of our citizens safe. Just another reason why Michigan is great!
