As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, it looks like Michigan is about to experience the perfect storm for pain at the pump.

The combination of Memorial Day Weekend travelers, a fuel pipeline shutdown in Wisconsin and an unplanned outage at a refinery in Detroit promted Governor Snyder to declare a State of Emergency.

According to Wood TV 8,

“We want to make sure the fuel Michiganders need for their travels to work, school or a long weekend trip is available,” Snyder said in a news release Tuesday afternoon. “This executive order will help ensure there are no artificial shortages of fuel impacting the state’s residents or visitors.”

The Michigan Agency for Energy’s executive director said the pipeline shutdown and short-term outage are leading to long wait times and affecting prices at the pump.

Right now gas prices in Kalamazoo are between $2.29 at the Citgo on E Michigan up to $2.59 at the Sunoco on Portage Rd.  That's on average a $.30/per gallon increase from a week ago.  Could we see the price go further up by Friday?
