The final straw was summer long construction on South Westnedge in Portage. The owners of MacKenzie's Bakery have decided shut down their current Portage location, tucked into a plaza next to Sam's Club.

That Portage location, at 7083 South Westnedge, will close on October 1st. In a release, owners John and Mary MacKenzie said they have decided to re-focus attention and resources on updating their existing locations, in the Westwood Plaza on West Main Street and on Harrison Street near downtown. The MacKenzie are no strangers to construction nightmares, with the Harrison location having survived the nightmare of the Gull Street roundabout project in 2017. Getting to that location was akin to navigating an obstacle course or maze.

John MacKenzie says Portage customers will continue to find their fresh-baked breads at Harding’s Market on South Westnedge. Mary MacKenzie says dining areas at the exisiting sites will be updated.

The first MacKenzie Bakery and Cafe opened in 1980. They previously had a more visible location on Westnedge, in front of the late Toys 'R Us, in what is now Moe's.
