Heritage Christian Academy's John Beck is competing this weekend for a national History Teacher of the Year Award.

To be selected to compete for the teacher of the year award, an educator must demonstrate a commitment to engaging students in historical learning through innovative use of primary sources, implementation of active learning strategies to foster historical thinking skills, and participation in the National History Day Contest. A team of teachers and historians choose the two national winners, who will receive $5,000 each in addition to the coveted title of teacher of the year. -

Beck from Kalamazoo along with Jennifer Gradkowski of Bay City are representing Michigan at the National History Day competitions, which are in College Park, Maryland, Sunday thru Wednesday this week  (June 10-14, 2018.)

The teachers who have been selected demonstrated their innovation and commitment to student engagment in history education and learning. Accorning to Michigan.org, criteria include "implementation of active learning strategies to foster historical thinking skills, and participation in the National History Day Contest.

The two national winners will be chosen by a team of teachers and will receive $5,000 each in addition to the title of teacher of the year.
