Kalamazoo Ride of Silence Is Wednesday (May 17th) in Portage

The Kalamazoo County Ride of Silence, which honors bicyclists who have been injured or killed while riding, and also hope to promote bicycle safety and awareness, is this Wednesday evening, May 17th at 7pm.The eight mile ride will begin at Portage Millennium Park, with free registration starting at 6:30p.

Tim Krone, who owns Pedal Bicycles, says:

“Locally, cyclists have caught bad breaks in the last year, and I think it’s very appropriate that we consider the 2017 Ride of Silence with three objectives in mind: to honor those injured or killed, to raise awareness of bicyclists and to ask that we all share the road, “edal is honored to host the Ride of Silence in Portage again this year, and I’d like to invite everyone to come ride with us. I think you’ll find it worthwhile.”

The ride comes mid-way through Kalamazoo Area Bike Week. According to a release from Paul Selden, the route will use bike lanes and public roads on Romence, Oakland, Kilgore, and Lovers Lane.  Helmets/waivers are mandatory; lights are highly recommended.

Chain Gang ride leader Jennifer Johnson believes that the Ride of Silence will have special meaning for many this year.

“We recognize and appreciate the support the greater community has provided the Chain Gang members and their families.  This ride will further help express that feeling of support and solidarity.”
