Austria announces demolition plans for Adolf Hitler's childhood home

The Austrian government announced Monday, October 17th, that the house where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889 will be torn down and a new building will replace it that has no connection with him. The plans for the three-story yellow house in the town of Braunau are intended to remove it as pilgrimage spot for neo-Nazis.

The government began legal procedures to dispossess the home owner and make the building state property after she repeatedly refused to sell it or to allow renovations that would reduce its symbolic impact.

A ministry statement emailed to The Associated Press quoted Sobotka saying he wants to ensure that any association with Hitler is eliminated at the site, adding that he could conceive of it being repurposed to house either government or social agency offices. - CBS
