Historic Photo Shows Mackinac Bridge During Construction
Today the Mackinac Bridge spans the straits that separate Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas and is one of the state's best known and most enduring symbols. This photo shows what the bridge looked like when construction was just getting underway.
The Mackinac Bridge was completed in 1957, one year after this photo was taken. The view is from the Upper Peninsula at St. Ignace and looking south across the Straits of Mackinac to Mackinaw City. At this point in the construction of the bridge, only the towers, and some of the bridge's piers had been completed.
