The contest is open to sculptures using materials that would normally be thrown away but given new life with your own original work of art! Contest participants are limited to the first 30 entries. The Recycled Art in the Park event will be May 7 -14 in Celery Flats Park where the art will be displayed outside.

The Portage Parks Board says in a release "this is a non-juried art show created as a venue for artists to express their creativity and create public awareness on recycling."

Public voting and judging will be conducted with prizes awarded in a variety of categories including $1,000 for First Place; $750 for Second Place; $500 for Third Place; $100 for Youth to 15 years of age; $500 for Sponsors Choice, and $500 for Public Choice which is selected from public voting.

The judges this year are Beth McCann, Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo; Mary Whalen, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts; and Dr. Oliver Evans, past president of Kendall College of Art and Design. They will judge the artwork based on adhering to the recycling content, with 60% based on creative use of materials as they were not originally intended, and 40% overall artistry and originality.

Entry is open to anyone to participate, including artists, and class submissions to express their creativity in sculpture. This is also a great event for an employee team building activity for your business to enter. Entry forms and sponsorship information can be obtained by visiting www.FriendsoftheParksPortage.com.
