Additional Information

The City of Portage invites area residents and visitors to attend the annual Tree Lighting and Traditional Holiday Celebration on Saturday, December 6, 2014, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The evening festivities begin with Mayor Peter J. Strazdas and the “I Love Portage” contest essay winners performing the ceremonial lighting of decorations in the Portage City Centre at the end of Library Lane. A horse drawn wagon filled with carolers will lead participants along the Portage Creek Bicentennial Park Trail to the Celery Flats Historical Area where the ceremony will continue.
The Traditional Holiday Celebration is free to the public and will feature music, caroling and the selling of hot apple cider, hot chocolate and coffee for a $1 donation per cup for charity. The Portage Northern High School Choir will perform and lead the participants in a singing of the carols, while the Proclamation Brass ensemble will provide additional musical entertainment. Participants can expect a special appearance by a visitor from the North Pole who will greet and meet the children in the schoolhouse. To close the evening, the Hayloft Theatre will open its doors with delicious treats for participants to enjoy free of charge, courtesy of area businesses. The City of Portage encourages the public to enter into the holiday spirit by donating gifts for needy families. The Portage Community Center will be accepting donations of new winter hats, gloves, mittens, toys, and non-perishable food items. Monetary donations will also be accepted.
Ample parking is available at the Portage City Hall and Portage District Library parking lots, as well as the Celery Flats Interpretive Center parking lots. It is recommended that all participants dress appropriately for the outdoor event. For more information contact the Parks Department at 269-329-4522.
