Since the surprise release this morning of his new album, Kamikaze, Eminem has been getting criticism on social media for the song “Fall,” on which he calls Tyler, The Creator a homophobic slur. Among the critics is Shady’s collaborator on the track, Justin Vernon, of the band Bon Iver.

“Was not in the studio for the Eminem track,” Vernon tweeted in response to a fan’s comment. “... Not a fan of the message[;] it’s tired. Asked them to change the track, [but they] wouldn’t do it.”

The song finds Eminem calling out the Los Angeles-based rapper and producer: "Tyler create nothin', I see why you called yourself a faggot, bitch / It's not just 'cause you lack attention / It's 'cause you worship D12's balls, you're sack-religious / If you're gonna critique me, you better at least be as good or better.”

Vernon sings the hook: “Don't fall on my face / Don't fall on my faith / Don't fall on my fate.”

Eminem apparently has taken issue with some mild criticism about his music that Tyler expressed last year.

The dis has brought out a wave of anti-Eminem sentiment on social media, including these choice messages:

Of course, not everyone called Shady out negatively; he did get at least one high-profile high-five, too:

Kamikaze is Eminem's second new album in the past year, following Revival, which arrived in Dec. 2017 and debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. He has not announced any tour dates to support Kamikaze.

Among the most immediately striking things about the album is its cover, a clear homage to the Beastie Boys' 1996 debut, Licensed to Ill.
