As someone who enjoys classic fighting games like Mortal Combat, Dead or Alive, and Marvel vs Capcom, this new shop that opened up in Downtown Battle Creek is calling my name. The shop is called Downtown Throwdown, and is run by Battle Creek natives Maurice and Cynthia Anderson. Maurice grew up playing fighting games, so this was something he was passionate about, as he told BCE"Arcades and things like that were a part of my culture growing up. But it sort of faded away when the at-home consoles gained popularity, and people preferred to game that way. I still liked the experience of going out and gaming though."

Although they maintain a focus on the modern systems like Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4s, they also have a separate section for retro gaming consoles like the Game Cube and Nintendo 64. The venue is open on Friday nights from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. It costs $8 to enter which comes with free play, and an additional $5 to participate in a tournament. The featured games are Puyo Puyo Swap, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mortal Kombat 11, Tekken 7, Street Fighter V, Samurai Shodown, Unist, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and Soul Calibur 6. Downtown Throwdown is located at 104 Calhoun Street in downtown Battle Creek.
