On Saturday, I received a letter from the Kalamazoo County Animal Shelter in regards to renewing my dog's license.

I was like, "Again?!"

Well, last time I was late paying, so I was charged $30. This year, I'm making sure I get it sent in time, so I only have to pay $10. There are different fees when it come to getting a license. So, here is a break down to make it easy for you. (Most of the fee increases won't take effect until Jan. 1, 2015.)

The fee to license an unaltered (not spayed or neutered) dog will increase from $30 to $40 starting Dec. 1, said Steve Lawrence, director of the Kalamazoo County Animal Shelter.

"By going up to $40, we're hoping it's the tipping point where some people decide to get their dogs fixed to avoid the higher (licensing) fee," Lawrence said.

The annual fee to license an altered dog will remain $10.

The license fee for an an unaltered (not spayed or neutered) dog will increase from $30 to $40 starting Dec. 1,

The price for owners who fail to acquire an unaltered dog license by March 1 will also increase from $45 to $55. The delinquent fee for altered dogs will remain $25.
