Emergency crews are responding to W.K. Kellogg Airport in the City of Battle Creek after a small plane crash.

Officials tell Newschannel 3 that the crash occurred around 8:20 pm last night and involved a small plane with a single occupant. That plane crashed shortly after taking off, killing the pilot.

WMU tells Newschannel 3 that the accident did not involve any people or aircraft from their college.  It was a small, experimental plane and witnesses say it was practicing takeoffs and landings when it appeared to have some sort of issue, crashed and caught fire.

Officials from the FAA are on their way to investigate, W.K. Kellogg Airport will remain closed through the night while the investigation continues.
