Officers of the Battle Creek Police Department responded to a reported traffic crash on Walter Ave and Irving Park Dr. at approximately 12:18 PM, Friday afternoon.

Upon arrival, officers observed a vehicle that was submerged in the Duck Pond adjacent to the intersection. Witnesses indicated that he car was traveling east on Walters Ave and had gone straight into the pond.

Witnesses also believed that they had observed someone in the car. Sgt. Fickle entered the pond to attempt a water rescue, but was unable to gain access to the interior of the vehicle and had to be pulled from the freezing water. He was then transported to Bronson Hospital as a precaution due to hypothermia concerns.

Rescue personnel eventually pulled the vehicle from the pond and it appears that the vehicle had entered the water unoccupied.

The incident is still under investigation.

The Battle Creek Enquirer captured video of the car's recovery.
