It's the time of year to say "I do", here are a few tips for Michigan brides!

For many brides, it is the little things that could trip them up on their big day. Here are 5 tips to help insure the perfect wedding!

1. Shoes matter!

Consider your second pair of shoes to be “Michigan” friendly, meaning that you will be able walk through the sand with them, walk across rolling farm hills, climb onto rocks , etc. Of course it all depends on the type of photos and how adventurous you want to be, but DO at least plan to have comfortable and safe walking shoes.

2. How should you wear your hair?

If you are seeking an outdoor beach wedding, be prepared for some wind to be coming off of Lake Michigan. If you decide to have your hair down for the ceremony, consider hiring a stylist you can be there in between the ceremony and reception, to possibly pin it back up in a loose, fun way for your reception. The winds can take out your curls and bobby pins, so be prepared for some touch ups (or bring hairspray if you are doing an up-do to smooth back throes flyways).

3. Do you have an electrical system to use?

Many northern Michigan weddings take place (at some point) outside, taking advantage of the intrinsic beautiful landscapes we have to offer. But while you are planning the logistics of your wedding, take into consideration this question: do you need electricity at some point, and where are you going to get it? For example, many brides love beach weddings, were they say their vows out on the sand dunes. This is a gorgeous wedding, but many of the guests can never hear your ceremony because of the wind, but where would you officiant be able to get a microphone or electricity to run it? Problems like these can be simple, but often overlooked.

4. It's Michigan, plan for rain!

Yes, unfortunately is it possible that it might rain on your wedding day. Because northern Michigan borders Lake Michigan, we get Lake Effect weather, which means we get more rain/snow and the weather is much more unpredictable. Make sure that if it does rain on your special day, you come prepared! Wedding photos can still be really cute, with matching umbrellas for your bridesmaids, dorky rain boots for your groomsmen, and much more!

5. The perfect time of day to say "I do"...

Northern Michigan is THE destination wedding area in the whole Midwest (not that I am biased at all). And the most glorious time of the day is actually sunset, when those golden rays touch down upon the beautiful grasslands and sandy beaches for romantic, summer light.

A Michigan marriage license is issued at the county level, which means that you must apply through the county clerk in one of either of the following:

  • Your Michigan county of residence
  • The Michigan county where your marriage will take place

Each individual county clerk has his or her own method for marriage applications and may require specific documents or information. At minimum, you will need:

  • To have at least one party present
  • A valid driver's license or state ID
  • A certified copy of each party's birth certificate or passport
  • Payment for the application fee of $20 for Michigan residents and $30 for non-residents

Wedding dates to avoid...

Even if your wedding is not in the cities listed below, these dates may cause you some headaches. Remember out of state guests may be flying into one of these city airports and the events could be problematic.

Depending on where you get married in Michigan, there are some important dates you may want to avoid in order to make sure that your wedding guests are comfortable and can easily find a place to stay. Ask your wedding planner or venue for tips about how to avoid major traffic times or local events that might make your wedding weekend more difficult for guests and more costly for you.

If you're on a tight budget, try to avoid common national holidays and busy weekends that tend to inflate the cost of everything!  Additionally, here are some nationally-recognized festivals and events you may want to note...

  • Movement (Detroit's Electronic Music Festival), (usually Memorial Day Weekend)
  • Detroit Grand Prix (early June)
  • Common Ground Music Festival, Lansing (early July)
  • National Cherry Festival, Traverse City (early July)
  • Michigan State Fair, Detroit (early September)
  • Detroit Jazz Festival (early September)
  • Detroit Free Press Marathon (mid October)

Every girls wedding day is uniquely different and beautiful! Just make sure to enjoy yourself and your special day!

Cheers!
