With the frightening news of a woman having her home broken into, and taken hostage over the weekend, I wanted to know how to keep myself save.

 Mlive reported this morning...

"That a 22-year-old man from Battle Creek forcibly entered the home of a woman he knew in Paw Paw and physically took a woman captive."

I started to think, how can we as single woman, who live alone keep ourselves safe? I do the obvious, I have a dog, carry pepper spray but what more can I do?

Here are the top 3 things I found that do not involve owning a gun, that can help keep you safe thanks to the web-site  popularmechanics.com...

  1. Plant thorny bushes around the window.
  2. Hang a bell on the door (will sound if someone tries to get in).
  3. Keep a glow stick on a key chain with a spare key on it. If someone is in the house and the police can't get in you can toss it out the window.

Most important thing, lock your doors and windows, know your surroundings, and trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right, there is no shame in calling for help, it just may safe your life.
